Art & Soul is presented by the Religious Faith and Literary Art program at Baylor University each spring. It consists of public cultural events, a national writing conference and a scholarly conference on religion and culture. According to the brochure, "Our goal is to create a distinctive Baptist literary center, grounded in Christian conviction but open to dialogue across disciplines and faith boundaries." The festival moves down the road this year from Las Cruces to the historic town of Mesilla. This is the ninth year for this vibrant, eclectic regional festival, which this year will offer no workshops and few panels, but concentrate on the trade show, a mini-border film festival, a storytelling tent and evening readings. This seminar is for all levels. Subjects covered include how to organize submissions, how to identify potential magazines, how to locate helpful resources, how to submit work, how to stay organized, how to deal with rejection and strategies for getting into print. The instructor is Barbara Ras, who received the Walt Whitman Award for her poetry, which has appeared in many anthologies and literary magazines nationwide. She is the Director of Trinity University Press in San Antonio. Registration $25 for members and $30 for non-members. 9 a.m. to noon. Work is focused on literary craft, with publishing and marketing hardly raising their heads. About 150 persons attend this conference held in the fort that was the backdrop for the movie "An Officer and A Gentleman." The pace is relaxed, but there are daily workshops, lectures and individual meetings, with faculty readings in the evenings. Sandy beaches and the Strait of Juan de Fuca are within spitting distance. This is the tenth year for this well-known conference with the focus, according to the sponsors, "upon developing fresh ideas and new writing goals under superb guidance. Exquisite dining every day, peaceful lodgings, and abundant performance activities with art all around are the charms of Spoleto." Concurrent workshops in vocal arts, cooking and vocal jazz. Attendees must apply, enclosing a brief writing sample and $550 tuition. Scholarships are available for approximately 12-16 persons. Said by an article in Poets & Writers magazine to have a "down to earth" reputation, this conference is limited to about 100 participants and emphasizes writing more than the business side of writing. Preassigned workshop groups are for no more than 12 writers or poets and one leader. Individual consultations also take place. Wine tastings and faculty readings are held each evening at a different vineyard. Inexpensive housing includes community housing ($30 for the 5 days) and dorms, or there are many inns and hotels in the area.

This well-known conference includes lectures, craft classes, meetings with editors and agents, readings by faculty and guests and workshops in poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction. Tuition is approximately $1,900, including room and board. Applicants may submit up to 10 pages of poetry and up to 25 pages of fiction or creative nonfiction. Auditors with no manuscript pay less.
